The Chooky Dancers Live at Yirrkala License Liberatorfilm ©2008 Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Incorporated What can I say about the Chooky Dancers? They're a group of Yolngu Aboriginal dancers from remote northeast Arnhem Land, Australia, near where I lived from 2004-2009, who first got attention on the internet for their bizarre rendition of 'Zorba the Greek.' To the outside world, this comic style of line dancing was a little known facet of life in Aboriginal communities until the Chookys took the world by surprise. When they came to town in 2008, my trainee Aboriginal film crew was there. Due to a rights issue, they're seen here dancing to my song 'License Liberator.' The whole performance and several other Aboriginal films are available on DVD from The Mulka Project. |
